Practical Training in Composition and Computer Music

September 2016 to June 2017

Applications Accepted: October 4—27, 2016 via the Ulysses platform

The Cursus program has changed: beginning in September 2016, it will be held over 10 months and end with a final concert given at the beginning of IRCAM's academy in June 2017. The Cursus 2 program has been discontinued to benefit the creation of a sole Cursus program, longer and with more in-depth instruction, held over a full academic year.

This hands-on training program provides 10 composers under the age of 35 with the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the theoretical and compositional issues involved in computer music. The long-term objective of this intensive, 10-month program is to provide participants with the technical independence necessary to create and express their musical ideas.

Learning focuses on the creation of a short work presented during a concert in IRCAM's musical season. This piece can be a mixed music work (solo instrument and electronics performed by a student from the Cnsmdp), a purely electronic work, an algorithmic work without electronics, or an installation.

Throughout the program, each composer must complete 8 progressively difficult modules, enabling them to master computer tools created at IRCAM or elsewhere and techniques taught during classes while preparing their final work.Courses are taught by a team of specialized computer music designers  (Éric Daubresse, Marco Liuni, Jean Lochard, Grégoire Lorieux, Mikhail Malt) and Hèctor Parra, the program's associated composer.

Cursus composers are in residency at the Cité internationale des Arts.
